And the best part is that in this park, he’s just like any other kid having fun.

From a distance, Crosby Park looks like any ordinary park with its customary playground, swings and slides. But upon closer view it’s really a park like no other. It’s a place where a kid can just be a kid, regardless of ability. It’s a place to exercise your senses and discover your musical talents; a place where seniors feel as welcome as children and families.

What separates Crosby Park from the rest is the attention paid to detail – the little things we so often take for granted. Crosby Park has been redesigned for inclusive recreation and every aspect of the park has been carefully considered to ensure it is not only accessible to everyone, but is a place the entire community is drawn to.

The first of its kind in Richmond Hill, Crosby Park (located at the corner of Newkirk Road and Crosby Avenue) provides a variety of recreational activities, personal enjoyment and socializing for all ages. The park's design interprets diverse landscape types including forests, meadows, dells, hollows, ponds, rivers and valleys to create a stimulating and fully accessible outdoor recreation environment.

Crosby Park has turn out to be even better than expected. The park is always bustling with people. Every time our family goes to the park people are always commenting to me saying how great it is and that it must be nice that Matheson can play in the park instead of watching. Matheson says "I love Crosby Park. It's the best park ever!"

It's so nice to be able to let Matheson explore the park without having to carry him through it and assist him every step of the way. We know it's a safe place for him to play too. Finally we have a place to be a family in a family environment in our community. Our boys can play together!

Thank you Richmond Hill for making our community accessible and family oriented.

Sandy Steplock, Richmond Hill

An inclusive recreation destination

Together, the community and the Town of Richmond Hill have created a destination that provides adventure and challenge with safety and variety for all.

Innovative Features Include:

A truly inclusive park experience

A park with something for everyone

A project that needs your help

Inclusive design provides a genuinely integrated and welcoming experience for all park users.

This project will serve the needs of children with disabilities and able-bodied children whose parents have disabilities, as well as adult and elderly residents of varying abilities.

The new park design accommodates the needs of individuals with mobility/agility impairments, sensory impairments, co-ordination impairments, strength/endurance impairments and cognitive impairments, permanent or temporary. Census Canada indicates that there are more than 16,000 children and adults with such disabilities in Richmond Hill.

Making Crosby Park available for truly inclusive recreation will make it an important asset for the whole community. I am a strong believer in the importance of recreation for both able-bodied people and people with disabilities. I often go out and 'wheel about' in my manual wheelchair for recreational exercise and am convinced that such activity, or just going to the Park to enjoy the greenery, can have many physical, psychological, emotional and therapeutic benefits.

Kerry M. Singh, 39, Richmond Hill resident

The Park’s inclusive design will ensure a genuinely integrated and welcoming experience for all park users, with its sensory-rich garden areas, walkways and trails, water features and social gathering places. The design interprets diverse landscape types - forests, meadows, dells, hollows, valleys and glades; brooks and ponds, orchards and fields - to create a stimulating outdoor recreation environment.

My 9-year-old son, like most autistic children, has trouble processing sights and sounds and interacting socially in the same way as others. Our family is excited that Crosby Park project will allow all children of special needs to explore their own curiosities in a comforting, safe and relaxed setting. It will allow them to be just like any another child playing in a park.

Ted Leider, Richmond Hill parent

I’m a member of a hiking club and will enjoy the Park’s new trails and pathways. But, since my wife and I are very gregarious, we’re really looking forward to it as a place to sit down and talk with people. We also think this new park is a beautiful way to include those in our community who may not be able to access and get as much benefit from other facilities. It will create a place for everyone to communicate.
